  Q.  What does waxing do for me versus shaving or tweezing?
  Q.  What is a Brazilian Wax?

Q. What kind of "skin care" should I being doing around the areas that I have been waxing? Is there anything special I should be doing?

A. Whether it is a simple Brow-wax or a full Brazilian-wax, your skin needs to be cared for. Do not sunbathe or utilize a tanning bed at least 24 hours before or after waxing. Also, applications of hydro-cortisone creams can help reduce the redness and/or irritation that can result from waxing.

To prevent in-grown hairs in the bikini area, you must exfoliate daily, and moisturize with a perfume-free moisturizer. Additionally, something that most Doctors forget to tell you... Don't wax any part of the body when taking acne medications. It can result in "skin-lifting" and possibly scarring!

Q. I've been hearing about foundations that also act as a moisturizer. What are your thoughts on them?

A. Many companies are now selling "moisturizing foundations" that really do not give your skin enough moisture... and as many of you have found, they do not have a long-lasting wear either. I suggest that you not purchase these products, but instead, use a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin-type (so as not to dry it out), followed by a good moisturizer. Here is a combination that I've found to be really good.

First, use Clinical Aesthetics Conditioning Cleanser, followed by a spritz of Agera's Soothing Conditioning Mist. Next apply an effecitve moisturizer such as Agera's Ultra Performing Cream. Then apply a Mark Lees Foundation... an "oil-free" foundation.

And to give you even MORE STAYING POWER, add a light layer of Mark Lees Loose Face Powder. After the application of the rest of your make-up, once again lightly spritz your face with Agera's Soothing Conditioning Mist. This not only sets your finished make-up, but will also take away the powdery look... and making your skin glow!

Q. What's the difference between the "over the counter"skin care products I can buy and the skin care products you sell online at KImberlySpa.com?

A. The "over the counter" product lines that you are likely referring to are considered cosmetic. Whereas the lines of products that KimberlySpa.com carry are considered "cosmeceutical". Cosmeceuticals represent a marriage between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Like cosmetics, cosmeceuticals are topically applied, but they contain ingredients that influence the biological function of the skin. Cosmeceuticals improve appearance, but they do so by delivering nutrients necessary for healthy skin. They are cosmetic skin care products that have "drug-like" benefits .

Cosmeceuticals are applied topically to the facial skin, or anywhere you desire improvement. They improve your facial skin's appearance by delivering the nutrients necessary for having healthy skin. Therefore the ingredients contained in cosmeceuticals are made to be more effective. They are required to be sold, and the results monitored, by a professional licensed esthetician or physician.

Q. Kimberly, I've had a redness to my skin ever since I can remember. It's always rough and dry. Why is this?

A. Many things come to mind, but first and foremost I would take a look at the other members of your family. This condition can be an inherited trait. Your skin could very well be on the thinner side, which causes the capillaries to be closer to the surface than other skin types. This makes them more easily exposed. Enlarged, visible facial capillaries appear most often around the nose and on the cheeks, and are often referred to as "broken blood vessels" by patients. Physicians call these dilated blood vessels telangiectases (tell-an-jek-ta-zes).

But photodamage caused by overexposure to the sun is the most common cause of facial capillaries. They occur more frequently with age and in fair-skinned people. However, genetic predisposition, personal habits (such as smoking and excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption), and medical conditions such as rosacea can also cause facial capillaries to develop.

Once facial capillaries develop, there is no way to permanently shrink them. Notice, I say "permanently"...you can use some topical products to help with shrinking the visible capillaries. hese products will help
with the exfoliation of dead, dried skin cells... and will also help to re-hydrate the skin.

I recommend using the Visual Changes line of products such as Ultra Gentle Enzyme Cleanser, Hydrocortisone Cream 2% and /or Retexture Cream.

Q. My skin always feels dry and looks peely. I want to use just a few products to relieve my skin of this. Hopefully you have something that doesn't have a lot of perfume in it. What would be your recommendation?

A. Try this...

In the A.M...

Step 1) After cleansing use Agera Microderma Kit w/Prolifersyn. This is the closest you can get to a professional microdermabrasion treatment. Use 3 to 4 times weekly. Your skin with feel really soft and smooth.

Step 2) Dry your skin, then apply Cinical Aesthetics Beta Glucan 5%. This exfoliating gel is non-abrasive. It accelerates the removal of the top layer of skin, which produces a younger, more vibrant skin tone.

Step 3) Moisturize with Agera Macroemulsion Moisturizer.

In the P.M...

Step 1) After cleansing...repeat steps 2 and 3 above... Do not perform Step 1 from above.

When you run out of the Beta-Glucan 5%, I would recommend that you move up to the 10% Beta Glucan
formulation. This will further the results you are looking for. I know from experience that by using these 3 products, you'll discover how simple and effective these will be in ridding your skin of dehydration and flakiness.

Q. I've been having a hard time looking in the mirror lately. I just turned 46 and when I wear make-up, I can see the lines around my mouth and eye area . I have been a "sun worshiper" and I use to smoke so I know what has caused my problem. What would you recommend for best results?

A. Don't worry, you're not alone...and I can help you. AminoGenesis products have ingredients specifically designed to help you dimininish the lines in these problem areas.

In the morning after cleansing, I would recommend......

Step 1) AminoGenesis Photolagen... This special formula is a combination of 2 technologies. The first, Photolagen, contains a propietary AminoGenesis amino acid skin rejuvenating technology. The second is a cutting edge sun damage repairing, patented pentapeptide added to create a formula unlike anything else currently available.

Step 2) AminoGenesis Facial Repair Formula... This product will give you a more radiant, healthful and trouble-free skin... beginning with the first time you use it! Facial Repair is lightweight and does not leave a greasy feel... yet moisturizes your skin, deeply.

Step 3) For the eye area use AminoGenisis Counter Clockwise. It contains the already powerful AminoGenesis base formula, but adds other important ingredients that are blended specifically for the delicate skin around the eyes. With the concentration of a cream, yet the water carrying abilities of a gel, this new product delivers gobs of moisture, nutrients and amino acdis right to where they are needed most!

In the evening after cleansing...

Step 1) AminoGenesis Tripeptinon... This new product penetrates deep into the skin to lift, firm and strengthen the connective tissues for the most youthful appearance possible.

Step 2) AminoGenesis Facial Repair Formula

Step 3) AminoGenisis Counter Clockwise

These products are easy to use, and you'll see results the very first time you use them! You'll be amazed as you watch your skin improve day after day!

Q. My husband works as a firefighter. With all the soot and ash, along with him wearing a very heavy helmet, his forehead and the sides of his face always seem to be broken out. What would you recommend he use to clear this up? I know he doesn't want anything with a fragrance or that's "girly".

A. I would recommend Visual Changes Skin Clearing Gel 5% or 10% ... use daily, and when he needs to clean his skin after working any fire. I would also recommend he use the Visual Changes Gly-Sal Pads... A.M. and/or P.M. These pads will help clear up his acne as well. These products are packaged in gender generic packaging and they do not contain fragrance. I have many men clients who use and like both of these products!

Q. I've been going swimming with my kids quite often this summer. Lately, I've been noticing a rash on my facial skin. I've been using a new prescription medicine for my thyroid condition. Could this be the cause?

A. Overall sensitivity to heat and severe skin rash are potential side effects to thyroid medication. If you need to be outdoors, my suggestion would be to stay in the shade as much as possible, and use a sunscreen with the highest non-chemical SPF available. Solar Protection SPF 58 is what I would recommend.

To help reduce the skin rash, I would recommend Visual Changes Hydrocortisone Cream 2%. Use this product daily until the rash subsides.

Q. I recently had open heart surgery, on February 14th to be exact.  My question is regarding the six inch scar that I now have on my chest.  Is there a product you would recommend applying to the area that would diminish the dark pigmentation of the scar. I'm self conscience about wearing low cut tops and bathing suits now.

A. First, I would recommend using Visual Changes Skin Lightening Serum and Queen Helene Vitamin E Oil in combination. Apply the Lightening Serum first, let it dry for a few minutes, then use the Vitamin E Oil on top. Do this morning and night. I would re-apply the Vitamin E Oil by itself a couple of more times during the day.

Secondly, use the highest SPF sunscreen possible. This would be the Solar Protection Tinted SPF 60 or Clear Formula SPF 65. Avoid exposing the scar to direct sunlight. The sun's rays will definitely darken the scar!

6-22-06

Q. I'm out in the sun all the time during the summer months. I have little ones that love to go swimming. I know what over-exposure to the sun does to our skin and I want to protect me and them as much as possible. What would you suggest as far as sunscreens?

A. First of all, I would talk to your children about the sun, and how important it is to make sure they don't get too much. They'll need some motiviation and you won't always be around to make sure they do these things. Understanding the consequences can help that. Beyond that I would...

1) Wear a  comfortable light weight hat and sunglasses... and if possible, find clothing with SPF added to the fabric.

2) Instruct them on how to use sunscreen (for example Solar Protection SPF 58 Oil-Free, Water Resitant, Chemical Free, Full Spectrum sun protection) and why it's so important. Apply 1/2 hour before going out side. Re-apply every hour and everytime they come out of the water.

3) Tell them to get out of the sun if their skin starts to look red and feels tender (ouchy) to the touch.

4) Once you/they get home, do not bathe right away. Let their skin cool down before bathing, then take a warm (not hot) bath/shower. (This will allow for their skin to rehydrate it's self).

5) Apply a healing type body lotion to your/ their skin... for example Amino Genesis Total Body Cocoon.

I commend you for this. Too often this education is neglected, and the effects of sun damage can last forever... and can be very damaging.

6-2-06

Q. After I have my eye brows waxed, they are red for a long time. Then after a few days, I get breakouts! Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

A. Make sure you are not taking any prescribed acne medication if you are getting waxed anywhere on your body (Accutane , for example). If you are not, I would describe your skin as being hyper-sensitive. Visual Changes Calming Serum will help decrease the reddness. Use this 2 to 3 times a day, until the redness is gone.

Now for the breakouts...when your skin is traumatized, for example having hair pulled away from the hair bed, your skin naturally floods the pore with lymph fluid. Lymph fluid contains natural anti-bodies that will protect
the pore from bacteria. Once the bacteria is neutralized, the pore will naturally purge the debris, which can result in "breakouts". I would suggest using Visual Changes Sulfur Sal Gel on each individual breakout. This product will help in reducing inflammation and dry up those breakouts.

5-18-06

Q. Kimberly, I've heared that you can moisturize your skin with your foundation. Is that true?

A. Absolutely not! Many companies are now selling "moisturizing foundations" that definitely do not give your skin enough moisture.. and as many of you have found, they do not have a long-lasting wear either. If you really want to do the job correctly, and all you are really concerned about is moisturizing your skin, I would suggest this daily regimen.

Start by using Clinical Aesthetics Conditioning Cleanser , followed by a spritz of Agera Soothing Conditioning Mist Spray . Then apply an effective moisturizer such as Agera Ultra Performing Cream with Prolifersyn Follow that with a Mark Lees Foundation... an "oil-free" mineral foundation.

And to give you even MORE STAYING POWER, add a light layer of Mark Lees Loose Powder. After the application of the rest of your make-up, once again, lightly spritz your face with Agera Soothing Conditioning Mist Spray. This not only sets your finished make-up, but will also take away the powdery look... making your skin glow!

5-2-06

Q. Kimberly, I have extremely fair and sensitive skin. I love the outdoors and I try to use the highest SPF I can find. But it seems that whatever sunscreen I put on, it makes me breakout. Help!!!

A. You're not alone! So many sunscreens have pore clogging ingredients added to them... even if they are Oil-Free! I've researched many a sunscreen and have found the Solar Protection line of sunscreens with SPF levels from 58 to 65 to be the answer. They don't cause you to breakout and they really provide a lot of protection. My clients have really had great success with these sunscreens!

And if you are looking for a little added color to help your fair skin, Solar Protection comes in tints too! Just pick the base color to match your skin and then adjust the depth of the tint by adding a few drops of the light or dark packets that come with it. They are really great products.

Q. I 've always had really dry skin on my feet, to the point that I get deep, painful cracks! I get regular pedicures, but I haven't been able to maintain the moisture between pedicures. With sandal season coming up, I want my feet to look good. What can I do for my foot problem?

A. Cracked, dry skin can be caused by a variety of conditions such as dry skin in general due to heredity, allergic reactions, eczema, and many other types of dermatitis. I would have a dermatologist diagnose your foot condition to rule out a foot fungus.

If you do not have a fungus, I would suggest using the Scrubbie Dubbie Ex foliating Gloves every time you shower or bathe. Once you get out of the shower or tub, dry your feet, then massage in AminoGenesis Cocoon Total Body Rejuvenation . Place socks on your feet for a couple of hours. I would also re-apply AminoGenesis Cocoon Total Body Rejuvenation at lease once more during the day. This product really does make legs, hands, feet and body feel the silkiest ever. Apply directly to troubled areas for problems like psoriasis, dermatitis or eczema. The rich amino acids go right to work helping transform your skin almost immediately.

4-3-06

Q. I've started having my bikini area waxed and I'm starting to get some ingrown hairs. Why is this happening now and what can I do about them?

A. Some people are just prone to ingrown hairs... either because they have very curly hair... or the acne bacteria is in their system. I always suggest to my clients that they make sure to exfoliate and hydate the waxed area everyday... or as often as they can.

To treat ingrown hairs after they occur, I suggest that you DO NOT PICK at them to start with. Ingrown hairs are below the dermis and can very easily get infected. This infection can turn into staph infection. You can treat these ingrown hairs with Visual Changes Sulfur Sal Gel or Visual Changes Clearing Gel 5%. These products can be applied to freshly waxed skin.

Q. Hi, I'm a 36 year-old male and I've been having problems with pimples on my head and back. My girlfriend says that I have blackheads and whiteheads, both. Is there anything you carry that can get rid of them? What's causing them to begin with?

A. Let's start with the last question, first. What's causing them? Experts agree that there are four basic factors that work together in developing Acne: hormones, increased sebum production, changes inside the follicle itself and bacterial production. Hormones cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge. This is normal. However, people who develop acne have sebaceous glands that can actually cause an increase in the sensitivity to those hormones, thus causing over-stimulated glands to produce excessive sebum and keratin. This leads to open comedones/blackheads (non-inflammatory lesions) or closed comedones/whiteheads (inflammatory lesions). Whiteheads and inflammation are caused by anaerobic bacteria (bacteria able to live without oxygen) which thrive in an oxegyn-depleted environment.

Ok... now for the solution. I would strongly recommend Visual Changes Skin Clearing Cleanser. This is a synergistic blend of antioxidants and natural botanicals with oxygenating, purifying, exfoliating, oil-controlling and soothing properties that combat propionbacterium (the most common acne -causing bacteria). It actively works on controlling pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and other forms of acne. It leaves your skin feeling fresh, healthy, smooth and blemish free You can also use Visual Changes Skin Clearing Cleanser as a shampoo for your scalp! It only takes a little... about a nickel-size amount.

You can see all our other acne skincare products here.

Q. My skin is really starting to look old and lifeless. I know I need some anti aging products. I have a friend who buys Agera from you guys, and another who buys Visual Changes. But there are so many anti aging products to choose from. How do I know what to buy. I really need something to rejuvenate my skin!

A. First of all, KImberlySpa.com has trained personnel that can answer all of your skincare questions. Just click on" Ask Kimberly" or "Contact Us" at the top of any KimberlySpa.com web page. Or, you can check out our "Product Regimens" Pages... also at the top of any KimberlySpa.com web page. Q. I've been using a prescribed ance medication for some time now. I went to see a different dermatologist and he suggested that I quit using it because the prolonged use could eventually cause me more problems than the acne that I was trying to treat was causing. Since I quit using it my face has developed a horrible red rash and is extremely dry and itchy. Is there anything I can do to help this heal up?

A. Yes, Visual Changes makes a product to heal this very condition. It is called Visual Changes Post Laser Gel. It contains all the healing properties many dermatologists and estheticians use in their offices to heal raw, irritated, itchy skin after skin resurfacing treatments. I would also recommend using Visual Changes Ultra Gentle Enzyme Cleanser to help gently exfoliate away the dead skin cells. After your skin has cleared of the redness and irritation, you can quit using the Post Lazer Gel. Then you can proceed once again with treating your acne condition.

Just as a side note... Visual Changes also makes a light-weight, oil-free, product called Visual Changes Retexture Cream that many of our "acne skin" clients use. This cream "calms down" the redness, irritation and inflammmation that acne tends to cause.

2-3-06

Q. Is there such a thing as a self-tanner with a moisturizer in it too?

A. As a matter of fact. there is! Fake Bake "The Face" is just that kind of product. It has some anti-wrinkle ingredients in it as well. This is really a great "all-in-one" type of product. You get some nourishing ingredients, some anti-wrinkle ingredients, a moisturizer and one of the highest quality self-tanning products out there.

If you have serious acne issues, this is probably not the product for you. Otherwise, Fake Bake "The Face" is a great all-in-one product. Your skin will feel velvety smooth and hydrated, with a beautiful natural looking glow!

Q. I have a teenage son that has terrible acne. I've read that microdermabrasion treatments would be beneficial to his condition, but we don't have anyone in our town that does this proceedure. Is there something he could use at home that will give him the same result?

A. Yes! Agera provides a great home product that emulates the microdermabrasion machine effect. Agera Microdema Kit with Prolifersyn and MagC is a two part system that can be used 1 to 2 times weekly. Prolifersyn is a special anti-aging Collagen and Elastin stimulator... and MagC Gel will help strenghten the skin from the inside out, will help lighten over- pigmented skin and pigmented scar tissue, and protect the skin from free-radical damage. It's really easy to do.

Q. I am wondering if you can let me know if there is anyway to prevent milia.  My daughter and I have milia and the only way we seem to be able to get rid of them is by extraction.  Do you have any other suggestions?  Thank you in advance.

A. Your skin needs a boost in cell turnover! I would Recommmend Visual Changes Skin Resurfacing Gel 12%. Apply approximately 3 drops all over your face, avoiding the eye area, AM and PM. This product will penetrate quickly and may leave your skin with a slight tingling sensation when you first start to use it.

You'll notice your skin start to flake after a few days... So exfoliation is important to help remove those dead flaky skin cells while using this product. I would recommend Visual Changes Microdermabrasion Derma Scrub. Use 2 to 3 times weekly AM or PM. After using the Derma Scrub, apply Skin Resurfacing Gel 12%, and then a moisturizer of some kind. If you don't already have one, I could recommend one... but I would need to know if your skin is Dry, Normal or Oily.

Q. The first jar of AminoGenesis I used peeled my face. The second one I ordered did not... Same ingredient. Can you tell me the difference?

A. This is not an unusual ocurrence. Very often, after using a new skincare product with very active ingredients for the first time, your skin's cell turnover rate will speed up. This can result in flaky dead skin tissue... in other words, your skin will peel. After your skin's cells turnover and rejuvenate, you won't see this happen anymore.

What likely happened is that the first jar caused the skin to go through that turnover and rejuvenation process. The second jar that you bought didn't have that same effect because your skin had already gone through the process. In other words, what has happened to your skin is a very normal ocurrence.

The question you have to ask yourself is this ... how does my skin look? If it looks better than it did before you started using the product, then everything is working the way it should.

Q. My skin always seems to get dry and irritated after I wax. Is there something that I can do to keep this from happening?

A. Whether it is a simple brow wax or a full Brazilian, your skin needs to be cared for after your waxing. Do not sunbathe or use tanning beds for at least 24 hours before or after your service. An application(s) of Visual Changes Post Laser Gel can help reduce the redness and/or irritation that can result from the waxing as well. To prevent possible in-grown hairs in the bikini area , you should exfoliate daily. You can also use Kalo Ingrown Hair Treatment to help with this potential problem.

You should moisturize daily with a perfume-free moisturizer. I would reommend AminoGenesis Cocoon Total Body Rejuvenation or Hempz Herbal Moisturizer. Lastly, though most doctors don't tell you, you should never wax any area of the body when taking acne medications. It can result in "skin-lifting" and possibly scarring.

Q. I have oily skin and even though I am in my 30's, I still get a breakout here and there. Not all over, just in certain spots. I really want to just pick at these but I know that I shouldn't. Is there something simple that I can do?

A. When eruptions occur on the surface of the skin and just in certain spots, you can treat them with a product that is designed for just that situation. You don't necessarily need to treat the entire facial area. One such product is Visual Changes Sulfur Sal Gel. This product will dry blemishes from the surface down. Zinc will absorb the excess oil, while Salicylic Acid works deep in the pores to exfoliate dead skin cell build-up. Canadian Willow Herb and Allantoin are used to calm inflammation and reduce redness.

I have seen this work best when applied in a thin layer at night. Then I would suggest using the Visual Changes Collagen-C- Youth Skin Complex during the day to help the skin become stronger, healthier, and help lighten any discoloration due to past acne scar tissue. This has proven to be a really GREAT combination for my clients.

Q. I think I might have Rosacea. How can I know for sure and what can I do about it if I do?

A. First, I recommend that you see a Dermatologist for a proper diagnosis. Rosascea is a chronic and potentially life-disruptive disorder that primarily effects the facial skin. Rosascea typically begins after the age of 30 as a redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may come and go. Drinking hot fluids, eating spicy foods, drinking alchohol, being in the sunlight or exposed to extreme weather conditions can bring on the symptoms. The symptoms of Rosascea can include the appearance of visible blood vessels, along with bumps and pimples.

If you do indeed have Rosascea, we've had a lot of success in eliminating those symptoms with a product called Visual Changes Retexture Creme. This cream contains Beta Glucan, Sage, calming and nourishing botanicals and anti-oxidants that help reduce the redness and swelling... as well as smooth out the texture of your skin, which will prevent breakouts.

Q. I've always thought about Botox injections, but I just can't bring myself to spend all that money..... not to mention the pain I've heard about. Is there a cream or something that can get the same results? I've heard about a Botox alternative. What is that and can you recommend one?

A. Is there a Botox alternative? I'll bet you I've gotten this question from my clients a thousand f times over the past few years... and finally the answer is YES! I've been researching a Botox alternative for myself, actually, for quite some time. I believe that I've found what you and I, and many others are looking for. It's from Nutra-Luxe MD. Their scientists have discovered a natural protein compound that smooths expression lines and protects from premature aging. It performs bascially the same function as Botox injections... but without the painful injections. It's a topical cream.

This Botox alternative is of botanical origin, and contains oligopeptides from the Hibiscus Seed. This compound posesses genuine "inhibition of muscle cell contraction" attributes, and has proven "anti-wrinkle activities". The active ingredient is called Myoxinal. Many of my clients have experienced great results from this product. I use it myself. I was actually a little shocked at how well this product works... and I have found that I even have more confidence after using it. It comes in 2 formulas... Nutra-Luxe MD Eye Wrinkle and Frown Line Formula and Nutra-Luxe Face Lift Formula. There is a video demonstration of the clinical proof on the web page that you can view. Try it. I think you 'll really like it... no, make that you'll really love it!

Q. I have very large pores that have "stuff' in them.  They aren't really blackheads but there is definitely gunk in them.  What is this gunk and how can I get rid of it?

A. Your skin has cells that turn over and die constantly. This, along with old, used -up lymph fluid, dead blood cells and environmental debris is what is in your pores. If your pores are simply clogged (without a raised whitehead), I would recommend using Clinical Aesthetics BetaGlucan Gel 5% daily after cleansing and toning. Also, Visual Changes makes a wonderful Fruit Acid Masque, that if you use 1 time weekly, will help you get those clogged pores cleaned out as well.

Try both of these products, I'm sure you'll see the results you are looking for. FYI.... Blackheads are just the end result of a whitehead that has somehow gotten oxygen in it, and has oxidized the whitehead turning it black.

Q. I have a huge problem with ingrown hairs in my bikini area. They are nasty and they hurt. I feel I have left myself with scars from tweezing and picking at them. I can't help it. The area is all red with white spots from where I picked. Unfortunately I do the tanning bed things as well and it makes the area look even worse. I bought some stuff but all it did was rip off a layer of my skin and not release any ingrown. I am fed up. I don't know what to do. I've heard about tend skin and alos Kalo and I'm not sure if either are right for me. I have ingrown hairs that last like 1-2 months. I feel sore and ugly. Please help!!!!

A. I can empathize with you. I've had many clients come to me with this same problem. Here is what is happening... When an ingrown hair occurs, the lymphatic system flushes lymph fluid to the sight of bacteria, surrounding the area with natural anti-bodies. This is actually what causes the swelling and pain. When you pick, you are allowing the good lymph fluid to escape and you are also allowing for more bacteria to enter.

The first thing I recommend to my clients is to try exfoiliating the area at least every other day. Then wipe the area with a cotton pad soaked with hydrogen peroxide. Then apply an ice bag for 10 min. This might seem like an
involved treatment, but when there is infection present, this MUST be done. The Kalo product works to "prevent", and works "on" ingrown hairs... and it does this very well. But it should not be used if the hairs have already been picked at. So once you get them cleared up, you can use the Kalo products. I recommend them highly. Here is a link to the Kalo Ingrown Hair Treatment.

I know ingrown hairs can be painful and unsightly, but picking at them will only lead to infection and spreading of the infection to other pores. The ingrown hairs are sub-dermal. This is where the blood supply is, so if you
pick, bacteria will enter and then can enter the bloodstream. This can also lead to staph infection, which is a very serious infection. You MUST stop picking. The white areas that are present, after the ingrown hair has healed, are scars! This is also why you do not tan in that area. Scar tissue does not tan. If the ingrown hairs occur after "any" type of hair removal..discontinue hair removal.

Q. I received a Gift Certificate for a facial for my birthday! I loved the facial! How often should I get facials? What can I do for my skin in-between my facials?

A. I'm glad you enjoyed your facial! While being beneficial for your skin, facials should also be relaxing! If your skin is not sensitive, you can have a them once a week if you want! Of course, if you are having them once a week, make certain your facial consists of 100% non-irritating ingredients. I have quite a few clients that do come once a week. Tthey feel that having a facial treatment actually helps them relax more than what a full body massage can!

Now if your schedule or funds don't allow for a weekly facial, then try to get a facial within a 21 to 28 day cycle. Your facial skin cells turn themselves over about every 21 to 28 days. If you choose to go this route, it is definitely going to require that you take care of your facial skin in-between those facials. This can easily be done by using topical Vitamin C gels and revitalizing moisturizers (including the oil-free variety) in the mornings and evenings. Along with this, an at home microderma system scrub should be used 1 to 3 times weekly. Here is a Vitamin C Gel, some Moisturizers and an At Home Microderma Kit that I would strongly recommend.

Q. Wrinkles, wrinkles wrinkles, what's happening to my skin? I'm 44 years old and I haven't really been much of a sun worshipper... So why am I getting so many wrinkles? What can I do to get rid of them and keep from getting more? I hate 'em!

A. There can be many causes. You say that you haven't been much of a sun worshipper, but how much sun did you get as a youth? Do you use products to block everyday Ultra-violet light? Sun damage can last a long time and can happen quickly. What are your eating habits? Is your stress level high... be it good or bad stress? Do you get proper amounts of sleep nightly? Look at your family history. Could premature aging be an inherited trait?

These are just a few things that can be the cause of your problem. To keep from getting even more wrinkles... you will likely need to make some life-style changes. If you want to rejuvenate your skin you must eat right and drink lots of water daily. Get lots of quality sleep. Lower your stress levels. Use a good sunscreen everyday. Beyond that...use proper skincare treatment products that "really" work!

And to get rid of those wrinkles you already have, I highly reccommend the Nutra Luxe MD line of products. The Nutra-Luxe MD Facelift Formula and the Nutra-Luxe MD Eye and Wrinkle Formula contain Myoxinol! This is the only ingredient on the market today which has been clinically proven, and directly compared with Botox, to reduce or stop the muscle movement under your skin... which is the major reason you retain those wrinkles. This effect is immediate (effects last up to 4 to 6 hours) and also long lasting whe used over time. You'll see a significant reduction of fine lines and wrinkles in only 26 days. It really is amazing stuff!

Q. I've been using an anti aging product that I feel has worked pretty well until recently. I just turned 45 and I'm noticing now that this product just doesn't seem to be keeping up with my skin problems. Wondering if there are there any new ingredients out there that will help me with anti aging?

A. Fortunately, new ingredients and new combinations of ingredients are being researched all the time. Agera is one of the leaders in anti aging research. They've created Stabilized Retinol that is delivered in a Lipopeptide/Oligopeptide complex. This combination does a great job of turning over skin cells, which in turn minimizes surface imperfections. This new product also conatins a combination of Maxilip and Prolifersyn, which offers collagen/elastin stimulation therapy more effectively than any other product I am currently aware of. This Maxilip/Prolifersyn combination is able to penetrate DEEP into the skin tissue and stimulate fibroblast cells that generate the collagen/elastin. This product will rejuvenate your skin by strengthening, lifting and toning your skin.

This new product is called Agera Evening Peptide Complex with Prolifersyn and MagC nano. It also constains Vitamin C which helps protect those new fibers that have been created from free-radicals and the potential destructive powers of ultra-violet light. Used once daily after cleansing, Agera Evening Peptide Complex with Prolifersyn and MagC nano will really re-vitalize old skin and you'll start to see and feel the restimulation.

Q. Help me, please. I've been getting my regular summer tan but now the skin around my eyes is starting to look really wrinkled. What can I do?

A. The reason the skin around your eyes is starting to look wrinkled is because the ultra-violet rays from the sun are zapping the collagen and elastin from that area. Your skin needs ingredients that are going to" fire off" the fibroblast cells that help produce the collagen and elastin fiber that is going to reverse the sun damage that's happened to your skin.. Also you will need hydrating and moisturizing ingredients to soften the outer cells to achieve a smooth, moist look around the eye area.

2 products come to mind that can help your situation... both made by AminoGenesis. The first is not only applied to the area around your eyes, but your entire face. This is necessary because what effects 1 area of the skin also effects other areas as well. This first product is AminoGenesis Perfect Reflection... which contains the anti-oxidants A, C, E and CoQ10 that will help your skin combat accelerated aging due to the overexposure you received from the sun. To concentrate on the dryness, lines and wrinkles around the eyes... AminoGenesis Counter-Clockwise Under Eye Reversal will deliver much needed hydration and amino acids to smooth and soothe your skin. If used daily, you should see results within just a few days after using these products.

Q. Kimberly, I've got a very irritating condition called Ichthyosis. This makes my skin very scaly and extremely itchy. I'm sure you know what it is. I've tried several different moisturizers but can't seem to find one that helps with this. Do you have any suggestions?

A. I completely understand your situation. I have had several clients in the past come to me with this same condition. The Hempz people have come out with a new product called Hempz Body Butter that will help you. Clients who have suffered from this same condition all agree that it has really helped their situation a great deal... Even after trying other moisturizers. This product is really great because it keeps your skin very moist without giving you that greasy feel that a lot of other body moisturizers tend to do. The main ingredients, that are really the key here, are the highly concentrated extracted oils from the Cannabis seed, and Shea Butter. I strongly recommend you give the Hempz Body Butter a try. I think you'll be pleased.

Q. I think I've finally done it. I'm afraid that after years of tanning, smoking and late nights my skin is finally ruined. Is there anything I can do at this point that doesn't require a lot of money? It's really in bad, bad shape.

A. First of all, I have always maintained that there is rarely (if ever) a single product that will give you back your youth. Having said that, I will tell you that AminoGenesis Photolagen AGF comes really close... as close as anything I have found out there. This product has really turned around of lot of my own clients' skincare issues in the past. AminoGenesis Photolagn AGF is extremely powerful, and together with a good sunscreen will do more with a limited budget than anything else I can think of to rejuvenate your skin. For the sunscreen you can try Visual Changes Ultra-Protection SPF30. You'll need this to keep any more sun damagefrom ocurring to your skin.

Q. I took the advice of one of my friends and got my first waxing service last month. I've discovered that I really prefer waxing to shaving now for a lot of reasons. But I've also heard that there are products out there that actually slow the growth of hair, and in some cases, even get rid of it completely. Do you know about this?

A. ABSOLUTELY! There is a product called Kalo Hair Inhibitor Cream or Spray. You apply it to the waxed area 3x's the day of your waxing, and then 3x's the following day. You don't have to apply it again until your next waxing.

It really does work. My clients have purchased it and use it all the time. Some have gotten to the point where the hair almost doesn't come back at all. You can get Kalo Hair Inhibitor in either the Cream or the Spray, depending on the size of the area you are working with. I highly recommend this product. It really does work... and like I mentioned before, for some people it has actually become permanent.

Q. I have a condition that makes my skin very flaky all the time. I think I need a good moisturizer, but I can't have any fragrance in it. Help!

A. I would recommend a product that we've just added to our line... Bioelements Crucial Moisture. I've done quite a bit of research on this product and have given it to several of my clients to test. Their skin was significantly improved. Bioelements Crucial Moisture contains all of the necessary ingredients that make a great moisturizer, plus... healing Adpatogens, aromatherapist oils and high-speed hydrators that seem to relieve the dryness almost immediately. This product doesn't conatin any artifical colorants, synthetic fragrances or animal by-products... so that fits your criteria as well. I really think this product is made for you.

Q. My eye area looks 20 years older than I really am! The skin is crinkly, puffy and dark. I work a lot of hours sometimes, and I find myself rubbing my eyes a lot. I know this is hard on my skin. But what can I do to take care of this problem?

A. I would strongly recommend Bioelements Multi-Task System for Eyes. This system is dedicated to taking care of the eye area. Several of my clients swear by this system, and I've seen the results myself. The eye area is possibly the most difficult part of the body skin to keep moist and protected. The muscles around the eyes are the most used muscles in the entire body. This creates natural character lines. These lines are then magnified by fatigue, allergies and the sometimes-constant rubbing you mentioned.

Bioelements Multi-Task Eye System is just that... a great system. It was created to tackle these exact problems by penetrating the skin with anti-oxidants, pigment-lightening Vitamin K and healing Chinese herbs. These will nourish, smooth, soften and lubricate the skin... locking in moisture to cushion the eye area. This lightens and reduces lines/wrinkles and the puffiness that you are experiencing.

Q. How can I remove self tanner from my hands and areas that absorbed too much product?

A. Removing self-tanner stains from your hands requires good old-fashioned elbow grease... using loofa or exfoliating gloves that are actually made specifically for skin exfoliation. I've had clients tell me that nail polish remover works also. But that is a technique I have yet to try. I have exfoliating gloves on my site... click here "Scrubbie Dubbie".

But you can actually prevent self-tanner from getting on your hands to begin with by using a pair of gloves when you apply it. When I ship a self-tanner, I always include a pair of reusable non-latex gloves to apply the self-tanner. If you purchased your self-tanner from the shelf, those may not be included. But a pair of "Playtex" gloves would probably also work. Just a reminder, if you have a latex allergy, find out what the gloves are made of before purchasing.

Getting too much self-tanner in other areas of the body can be a problem as well, causing an uneven look. This happens because of excess dead skin that has built up in those areas. Examples would be the knees and elbows. Why? Because self-tanners activate with a catalayse enzyme (that is already in our skin) that stains the dead skin cells that have accumulated. We can also get a blotchy look after a few days because our clothing rubs against our skin, and exfoliates/removes those dead skin cells that were in those areas where we applied the self-tanner to start with. Therefore, it's really important that you exfoliate BEFORE applying the self-tanning product.

I have used a self-tanner for many years, and feel that I have developed the best method to achieve a faux tan. I suggest exfoliating every other day with my "Scrubbie Dubbie Exfoilating Gloves", and re-applying the
self-tanner "Fake Bake" at the same time. You'll get a great faux tan without all of the issues I've mentioned!

Q. My skin feels as sensitive and brittle as a dried up twig! When I wash my skin, the cleanser I'm using makes my skin feel like it's burning and drying me up even more. Can you recommend a cleanser that won't do that?

A. Agera Conditining Cleanser can be used for all skin types. It is very gentle and will make your skin feel extremely comfortable after using... You won't have that greasy residue feeling either. This is a great product for your problem. It is also very effective in removing make up... I recommend this cleanser to anyone on acne medication, such as Accutane, as well.

Q. I am in the middle of a very nasty cold and my nose is raw from using tissue. Is there any product that you can recommend to help me with this problem around my nose?

Q. I'm hosting a big New Year's Eve party this year. It is also my husband's and my 10th Anniversary. I know we'll be having lots of pictures taken. The stress has given me a huge breakout on my chin. How can I get rid of this before New Year's Eve?

A. Margaret, take action now. Apply Hydrogen Peroxide to a cotton ball and hold it on the breakout for a couple of minutes. Then apply ice for 10 minutes. Then use 1 Visual Changes Gly-Sal Pad and masssage this over your breakout. Do this up to 3 times a day and whatever you do... do NOT pick! This should do the trick. Happy New Year and Happy Anniversary!

Q. I have a real problem with ingrown hairs in my bikini area. It really frsutrates me and I don't want to have scars. I've used the tends product but with minimal results. Any advice, please?

A. Lacey, whether you are waxing or shaving that area could be the culprit! Some people are just prone to ingrown hairs in the bikini area. That skin is very thin and is not exposed to air as much as other parts of our body. Also, the constant rubbing and pressure of clothing (hosiery, underpants, slacks, workout gear, swimsuits etc... ) can cause the skin to be dry and sensitive... which can allow dead skin cells to build up and possibly block the hair from penetrating the surface of the skin. Therefore, the hair grows under dead cells and takes a U-turn back down into the pore or a neighboring pore.

My advice is in 2 parts...

1) To help prevent ingrown hairs, I recommend you exfoliate every day using my Scrubbie Dubbie Exfoliating Gloves. These gloves are much more effective and convenient to use than any other exfoliating product I've tried. Next, every day after exfoliating, spray on my Kalo Ingrown Hair Treatment. My clients who have tried other brands feel that this product works best.

2) How do you deal with an ingrown hair once you already have one? LEAVE IT ALONE!!! I've seen many serious infections in ingrown hairs due to picking at them. Let them come up to the surface on their own. Or if they are really large and painful, they can be lanced by a doctor. Here's an at-home treatment to try: Apply hydrogen peroxide to the ingrown hair, then hold ice (ice bag, bag of frozen vegetables, gel pack etc... ) on top of it for 10-15 minutes.

11-13-04

Q. I tried your reommendation for treating a recent acne breakout and it worked! But now I'm left with little reddish marks all over my face... will these go away?

A. Those marks are a result of THAT particular pore healing. The redness is the vibrant color of fresh new cells (that have not lost the life color due to cell aging). Yes, these will go away... But it takes time. You'll heal even faster if you add a couple of drops of Queen Helene Vitamin E Oil to your moisturizer. Vitamin E oil acts as an anti-inflamtory and helps reduce formation of scars.

10-11-04

Q. I've noticed my oily, acne-prone skin looks better after I get sun exposure. But now the summer is over and I'm concerned my skin will go back to having breakouts again. Will tanning beds help during the winter months with this?

A. No, no and NO again! The reason your skin "looks" clearer after exposure to the sun is because the UVA & UVB rays are causing severe dehydration! Therefore, there is damage being done to the tiny blood vessels that bring nourishment to the skin. And when those blood vessels are damaged, the skin suffers from a form of malnutrition. This weakens the body's natural defenses (Langerhar cells) against free radicals; infections such as acne can result. In all honesty, you've probably done some serious damage to your skin. You should see an esthetician and remedy that first. Then, you can look at the Agera Acne Shield Home Regimen as a solution to your acne problem.

Q. Does Microdermabrasion help in reducing the risk of skin cancer?

A. Microdermabrasion is a stimulant to fibroblast cells that release collagen and elastin. It also increases the circulation of Lymphatic fluid. Lymphatic fluids carry nutrition and anti-bodies to the skin. Along with the resurfacing effects of Microdermbrasion, this will allow for anti-oxidant ingredients to deeply penetrate the skin to help neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals that weaken the skin and leave the skin susceptible to cancer cells. Here is a product that you can use at home as well... Agera Microderma Kit

8-10-04

Q. I recently had to spend more time out in the sun than I was expecting... and now my skin is dull, dry, fleshy and just plain lifeless! Help... What can I do?

A. Sounds like your skin needs the care of an esthetician. There is no "simple" answer in this situation... because it sounds like your skin has suffered some fairly serious sun damage already. A good esthectician will recognize what treatment(s) your skin is requiring. They can recommend the appropriate at-home products that will recondition and rejuvenate your skin. Agera Intensive MagC Gel and Agera Microderma Kit can offer immediate help.

7-13-04

Q. I use a Make-Up base that has a sunscreen added to it. Is this enough for the day?

A. Depending on your daily activities and how much staying power the make-up base has... If you have active days that involve outdoor exposure, you should apply a small amount of sunscreen every 2-4 hours. Also, some make-up bases have NO "staying power"... especially if your skin is oily. Finding a make-up base that contains a high mineral content will help your foundation have that "staying power"... e.g. Mark Lee's Foundation has exactly that.

6-16-04

Q. What can I do about small veins showing up on my face? My dad has them also.

A. These veins are most commonly referred to as telangiectasias... small red enlarged capillaries of the face and other areas of the body. Avoiding sun and hot temperatures will help lessen the possibility of telangiectactic development. Heredity AND life-style has everything to do with this condition. I would recommend making an appointment with me (or your local esthetician) so that I (they) can evaluate your skin in greater depth, determine your skin's condition, and subsequently recommend an "at- home" skincare regimen that will help prevent and correct your skin's condition. For immediate help you can try Agera Intensive MagC Gel This is a product that will help strengthen your skin.

Q. I've recently had my hair and skin care product bottles explode in my carry on... Yuck! Do you have any tips on preventing this sticky situation?

A. First, remember that air expands the higher you get in the atmosphere... and because there is less pressure from the outside of the bottles and tubes, things tend to do that. I've found that shaking my product down to the bottom of my bottles and tubes helps some... and squeezing out excess air before putting the lid or cap back on seems to solve the problem. As extra insurance, I place my products in Zip-Lock bags... just in case! :)

4-15-04

Q. I know that Microdermabrasion can stimulate the turnover of skin cells resulting in the reduction or lightening of sun-spots... Does it also help in reducing the risk of getting skin cancer?

A. Microdermabrasion is a stimulant to fibroblast cells that release collagen, elastin, increase fluid circulation and resurfaces the top layer of skin. All these benefits allow for strong-antioxidant ingredients to penetrate to the basal layer of the skin. This helps protect the life of the cell. You can also try Agera Microderma Kit

However, research has not yet shown that it aids in the prevention of skin cancer. But there is some research in this area, and someday esthetic procedures like microdermabrasion may prove to be helpful in this area.

Q. I have a 16 year-old son who has had skin problems since he was 13. But it seems to have gotten worse since he started playing basketballl again this winter. What's up?

A. Sweat! Make sure he washes his skin after every time he has a healthy workout of any kind! Sweat contains the toxins from what we've ingested, and the waste our body cells no longer need. Letting the sweat dry on your skin allows those toxins to wreak havoc on already irritated skin tissue. This goes for Moms and Sisters too! He and you should also use Agera Salicylic Wash whenever sweat is an issue. This product will kill those toxins and prevent acne from ocurring.

Q. Recently, I've been using a self-tanner... I like the color but I'm curious how it works...

A. A self-tanning product is a cosmetic product designed to produce an "artificial" tan without requiring exposure of the skin to the sun. The main ingredient in most topical products is DIHYDROXYACETONE (DHA), a chemical that acts only on the skin's superficial cell layers. When the DHA combines with certain amino acids and keratin in the skin's outer layer, it produces a natural golden color. However, as the skin sheds its dead cells, the tan fades... usually within a few days of application.

For best results, users should exfoliate before application because the DHA may be absorbed unevenly in the areas where there is a thick layer of dead cells... especially hands, elbows and knees. The depth of color is determined by how often the product is reapplied, not by how much is applied at one time. It can take between three to five hours for a self-tanner to develop fully. Most self-tanning formulations have a short shelf-life once opened because DHA degrades quickly, and should be used up within three months of opening.

Not sure which self-tanner you are using but I would recommend Fake Bake It is the top selling self-tanner on the market today.

Q. What does non-comedogenic mean? I see it on product labels all the time.

A. A comedone is a sebaceous follicle that is plugged with sebum, dead cells and toxins (pollutants) that come from within our bodies, as well as the environment. Therefore, products that are applied to the surface of the skin should contain ingredients that do not plug up the follicles. They should be "non-comedogenic"... or "non-plugging". Visual Changes Gly-Sal pads are great at preventing clogged pores.

Q. What does SPF really mean? I put on a 30 SPF sunscreen on my vacation last week and still got a sunburn!

A. SPF stands for "sun protection factor". SPF is a number that represents how long a person can stay out in the sun, without burning, while using the product. It is a measurement of the Minimal Erythenal Dose (MED) contained in the product... which stands for how much time passes without the skin turning red from irritation. But it is all relative!

If a person normally burns in one hour without sunscreen, an SPF-2 will theoretically allow the same person to stay out in the sun 2x's as long, or two hours without burning. An SPF-4 would allow them to stay out 4x's as long etc... But the key phrase here is "if a person normally burns in one hour". If another person normally burns in 30 minutes, then an SPF of 2 would only prevent them from burning for  60 minutes, or one hourSPFs are designed to measure sunburn prevention... not the amount of light that is actually being blocked or screened that contains harmful UVB and UVA rays.

If you are looking for a great sunscreen, Agera and Visual Changes Sunscreens are both fantastic products. Both are available at KimberlySpa.com

Q. What is the difference between an esthetician and a dermatologist?

A. An esthetician is a trained professional who takes care of and administers to the surface conditions of the skin. A dermatologist is a trained professional able to diagnose and prescribe medications to treat diseases of the skin. As an esthetician, I am able to use and recommend cosmecuetical grade skincare products. In fact, I use and recommend only skincare products that are the highest grade allowable. Agera, Bioelements and Visual Changes are just a few of the product lines I recommend. You can find all of these products at KimberlySpa.com

Q.  What if I buy and use one of the products you recommend... and then have some type of skin reaction?

A.  No problem! I'm here to help you with your skin care concerns... regardless of the problem. However, not every product I carry can be used by everyone. In most cases these problems can be solved by a simple product adjustment... usually solving the irritation. I guarantee all products that I carry 100%... because I have selected only the product and product lines that I have SEEN WORK!

Q.  What does waxing do for me versus shaving or tweezing?

A.  Waxing will slow hair growth naturally by pulling the entire hair out... thus slowly and purposely damaging the growth bed. If done on a regular 2 week to 4 week schedule, you could notice a significant change in the hair growth rate within just a few waxing cycles. Those of you with more resistant hair can use Kalo Hair Growth Inhibitor Creme or Spray. It is possible to actually STOP hair growth with these products if used often and long enough.

Q.  What is a Brazilian Wax?

A.  There are quite a few descriptions floating around these days, but plain and simple, a Brazilian Wax is removal of every last hair around the vagina and anus. You can leave as much above as you want. Very important information on maintaining your Brazilian is given at the time of the waxing service.
